“Glory to God for all things,” are the dying words of St. John Chrysostom. For me, they stand as a reminder that the commandment to give thanks for all things means just that. St. John, of course, was in a painful exile, “at the ends of the earth,” in Byzantine terms, at the time of his death. But his words, like the liturgy that bears his names, remind that we are created to give thanks to God and to glorify him. As Fr. Alexander Schmemann used to say, “We were created to be doxological, eucharistic beings.”
