Prayers for a Dear Friend of Us All

I spoke by phone this morning with Michael Bauman, for years a faithful part of our conversations on the blog. He shared with me that he is now in home hospice care (in Wichita) and has been given a terminal diagnosis. His faith is truly evident in his conversations, even as those present their own struggles.

I was struck particularly by his “joy” which he says seems to persists beneath everything. This is a gift from God.

Please keep him in your prayers and remember his wife, Merry. May God grant him paradise and a place with the saints. I will keep our community posted with any further news.

I only briefly commented here and it has been probably a year or so since the last time though I have continued to read on and off in my spiritual wandering.

Michael has been one of the most wonderful people in these comments or any comments anywhere. Kind , humble, and friendly and I’ve found his stories of encounters with angels to be intriguing and moving.

Prayers for you and your wife, Michael. Hopefully, you’ll be back here. In any case, prayers for peace and God’s divine blessing on you.

    Mr Bauman,

It is a rare opportunity to be able to tell someone you love them before their funeral. So, I thank you so very much for your kindness and wisdom to me on this forum, and your love (such as it can be online like this). You and your dear wife certainly have my prayers in this time. When you get there, please pray for me.

    With love in Christ,

I have learned so much from Michael over the years, and from Merry. I send a hello to them both in this difficult time. I greatly appreciate the wisdom shared, both on faith and related to history, and the window into his childhood home and being taught interdependence. I know an amazing Eternal home awaits him and I will be praying. That he is joyous in this time speaks of God’s kindness and presence and Love stronger than death. Thank you, Michael for the many lessons.

Dear Beloved Brother in Christ, Michael,
How often I have waited to see your comments in Father’s blog. Over these years we haven’t met in person, but I sincerely believe we have met, and spoken to each other here, heart to heart. Dear beloved brother I pray that Our Lord embraces you, brings you joy, illuminates your path to Him as He has always done with you. God bless you and dear Merry. Both of you have been such a joy and on several occasions you have made me laugh at myself! Such a wonderful gift you have given us dear one!

I did a little “research” on the “dashboard” of the blog. It officially began in October of 2006. Michael Bauman’s first comment was in November of 2006. Over the years, he has contributed over 6,200 comments – which is to say he has been a very important part of the conversation hereabouts. To say that he is missed and will be missed is an understatement.

    Michael,

I’m glad to see you are still reading here. The absence of your contribution in the comments has left Father Stephen’s blog bereft of a unique (and enthusiastic) perspective on its subject that I’ve enjoyed ever since finding the site. Although we’ve never met, I do feel as though I know you a bit. After Father Stephen posted his photo of the two of you, I was able to find a video of you discussing the tours you have given of your sanctuary. Your spoken voice sounds much as I would have expected from your writing 🙂

O Lord, look upon the work of Your hands Michael. Take away any fear he might have, and send Your angel to comfort him with the strength of Your presence, even as You were comforted in Your agony. Commend everyone he loves, especially Merry, to Your providence and care, knowing that You will do more for them than He could ever desire.

    With love to you both!

    Mark, et al
It seems astounding to me that the blog will have its 20th anniversary next year. Michael has been a consistent presence and a helpful friend for us all over that same time. There are actually only a very few commenters that I’ve met face-to-face across those years…and only a small handful (less than 5) who were ever parishioners at St. Anne. When I began the blog, I kept a “firewall” up between that work and my parish ministry – for a variety of reasons. The wall came down at the parish council’s request in the later years.

What I have met, particularly as I’ve traveled and spoken at parishes and conferences across the country have been readers who say very similar things about their experiences in reading – for many of them – that it was helpful and even instrumental in their journey to Orthodoxy. Many have also noted that they found the conversations in the comments to be as helpful or even moreso. That is a testament to so many!

I am slowly settling into my new home and enjoying the life in our new parish (I am one of 5 priests – and there’s a Deacon). I have known all of them previously, but enjoying the comraderie of it all. We had over 500 for Pascha!

    Father Stephen,

Yep. I have been following along with your updates on Facebook (the one advantage of it perhaps being the quick and concise if lacking in nuance Like button). I envy your retired status some in that I, too, have lots of home chores to do and find work at which I can set my own schedule and pace the most enjoyable.

You are not so far away and about half the distance between here and the coast. I used to go to Charleston and Pawleys Island every few years. When I make that trek again, I’ll see whether you are around for a visit (including perhaps your Parish–which sounds wonderful).

With tears rolling down my face, I thank Fr Stephen and all of you for your love, prayers, and kind words. Michael still is able to visit on the phone and enjoys calls from his friends. I dont know if Fr allows personal info but his number is 316-617-2732. (If he does not hear the phone use 316-619-2390-mine.) You are also welcome to email him at email hidden; JavaScript is required.
My strength wears out quickly but God gives me His to get thru the day. I was in a bad car wreck in Dec 2023 and God saved my life-perhaps to be able to keep him home thru this time. I have a back injury that makes it hard at times, but God is merciful . Michael has lost over 120 lbs since that picture I took of him and Fr Stephen. He wants to make it to church at least one more time, so I ask your prayers for help Get him there to do that. I am blessed to be able to work from home now and our hospice workers are SO kind! He has long discussions with the prodestant chaplain and has about converted him! We are grateful for the time to share. Michael was 77 on April 10 and I am six months older. Fr Stephen and his blog are very dear to our hearts,as are all of you. Your outpouring of love and prayers are so touching and gratefully received. I am crying for the first time since January when he was in the hospital. But they are a healing balm I realize now I badly needed. A simple “thank you” is not enough. I will gladly share our phone numbers if you email me. Paula and I met thru the blog and we have become sisters of the heart thru the years. Her support is so helpful now too. I am praying for a painless, peaceful death with a good defense before Christ for all of us. You are in our prayers as well. My cup runneth over today.

    J,
Yes. The Nicene Creed is recited (or sung – it depends on the jurisdiction as to which way it is done) at every Divine Liturgy. It is also in the service of Compline which comes up every now and then.
