I don't know how I missed this little masterpiece here! it really reminds me of Saint Justin Popovich....
Indeed, our current rationalised western world keeps searching for and proclaiming supposed 'universal truths' rather than Truth Himself - the Living Divine Logos, incarnate and crucified and eternally manifesting that: though love is perceived by us as death -to die fro someone else- Love is over death!

Fr. S-

I like what you say here, dangling or not. You've contrasted Reason with the Heart . . . where God resides. I haven't read D. but I'm sure his Russian soul had this knowledge of the heart embedded within, and thus his contrast with the world of reason works (for you).

Sorry, now I'm combining both dangling and rambling together!

Scott,
The Protestant, rational, approach to the atonement, is to see each man as guilty (responsible) for only his own sins, and that these are taken care of by the sacrifice of Christ in a transactional view (forensic) of the atonement. I did this, He did that, now I'm forgiven. The more Orthodox approach, which is more mystical and less rational, is to say that the nature of sin is a very communal thing. No one sins entirely on his own, nor do his sins effect only himself. The declaration of love is, "Each man is guilty of the sins of everyone." This is a profession of love rather than a profession of our legal standing. But we are united to one another, and by love, bear one anothers burdens. Like Christ, we take upon ourselves the sins of all (in union with Him - for there is no Christ who has not taken upon Himself the sins of all). Thus as we forgive everyone for everything, we find ourselves participating in the love of God, who does exactly that.

Father, this is an excellent post. I am new to Orthodoxy (that is, I was baptized a little over a month ago) and I didn't understand when you said "He embraces the irrational claims of the gospel – every man is guilty of the sins of all…we must forgive everyone for everything…" This may be one of those 'dangling ends' you mentioned. Could you elaborate on what this means in light of Scripture and Orthodox teaching?

Christ is risen!

This is one of your best posts. It needs to be heard in today's Orthodoxy. It is too easy to fall into mere religion.

Steve. Indeed. I have been enjoying the book immensely - thus it occupies a lot of my thoughts - and thus it comes out on the blog (probably in a sermon or two).
